August is the best time to experience the North York Moors village shows and meet true Yorkshire folk.
The agricultural, country and village shows are an important part of summer in the North York Moors. You don’t have to be a farmer or equestrian to enjoy the pedigree cattle, sheep and horse events. There are displays of fruit, vegetables and floristry, and competitions for home cooking; cakes, preserve and handicraft and art.
Often show grounds are surrounded by beautiful gentle rolling hills forming natural amphitheatres for the days events. This is your chance to rub shoulders at the show ring with local farmers dressed in their best tweed, hear unique Yorkshire dialects talking about how they have faired this past year; and then go on to reminisce about bygone years and of course the laughter follows.
You will see generations of farmers all taking turns watering and keeping watch of their prized Rams or Cattle; or sharing excellent picnics out of the backs of 4 x 4 the last year the year or years past.
Each village show is unique and reflects local community some have Show-jumping, Dog show and races, brass bands, fell running, fly-fish casting or fairground rides.
