The Grove House Holiday Cottages at Levisham Station, head east (turn right from the gate) walk up the hill to the horseshoe bend carry on straight up to "Rita's" bench and then bear left and ascend the bank. At the top turn right parallel with the stone wall, continue straight ahead at the corner of the stone wall and head towards Dundale Pond from there you will pick up the signs to Saltersgate and the Hole of Horcum. The track is wide and dry.
Look! out for Lapwing, Sky Larks, Wheatears, Kestrel, Grouse and if lucky a Merlin. Underfoot (hopefully not) in Dundale Griff you may see an Adder - don't panic - just watch and marvel a while before walking around. Similarly the Highland Cattle will ignore you - remember to keep dogs on leads and don't split the herd.
Listen! You are sure to hear the busy buzz of Honey Bees. Bee Keepers move their hives to the moors so the bees forage on Ling Heather you may even cross their flight path - they will be heavy laden with nectar so will be more intent on getting their precious cargo home than to cause you any intentional harm. Walk calmly on and you will soon be through them.
At Saltersgate and the A169 take time to survey the expanse of the Moor to the North, even the mighty RAF Fylingdales looks small.
You then descend into the hole, across meadows and a wood lined stream. When the path crosses the stream you have a choice of walking straight on and around the brow into Levisham Village (1.5 miles amongst the trees, often wet and slippy) or turn right and head up Dundale Griff to: a) Dundale Pond and back to Grove House or b) up to Limpsey Gate Lane and Levisham Village.
There are numerous walks from Grove House Levisham Moorland Cottages many of our guests use the NYMR heritage railway at Levisham Staton (80m away) to get to places further afield often walking or cycling one way and catching the train the other.
Our cottages are ideally suited to two adults so perfect during the school summer holidays for teachers looking to escape, unwind and recharge. We are dog friendly too.
